Action Aplenty @ Murray Bridge Opening Night .....

The 09/10 South Australian Wingless Sprint season kicked into gear Saturday October 10 at Murray Bridge in front of a healthy crowd for the opening night of the race calendar. Just under a dozen cars were in attendance with some of South Australia’s best on show. We had current SA series champion Todd Wigzell, Mason Merritt, Adam Sealey and making his wingless sprint debut, we had sprint car gun Jamie Cobby driving the Tim McAvaney s15 car. At the other end of the spectrum, we had a some rookie drivers kick starting their wingless sprint careers. Keke Falland, Mark Bennett, Cody Atkins and Darryl Sloan all were keen to make an impression.

First heat saw Mt Gambier driver Adam Sealey lead most the race while locked in a battle with Merritt, Cobby and Wigzell. Jamie Cobby made the outside his own, moving from third to first on the last two laps to snatch the win from Sealey.

Second heat of the night was almost a mirror image of the first as Jamie Cobby took it out after starting on the front row along side Todd Wigzell. Wigzell led a great battle with Mason Merritt and Cobby but it was the 15 of Jamie Cobby yet again taking out the heat win, followed by the 88 of Todd Wigzell and 55 of Mason Merritt in third.

The feature promised to be a cracker with Jamie Cobby, Mason Merritt and Todd Wigzell all up the front, it didn’t disappoint! The three were locked in a great battle from the outset until Merritt struck trouble at half race distance and was forced to watch on, as Wigzell took the lead from Cobby right up to the white flag lap where Wigzell made contact with a slower car, causing the sa88 to flip violently down the front straight, into the turn one fence. He thankfully walked away but the car I must say looked very second hand.
